First Time Out of the Pond

Well its is now 7am on the 8th and I am posting about what has happened on yesterday. Well I went in at midnight and as was well for only having a few hours of sleep and then morning came and one of our techs was going out to a site that has been down for a 2 days now. Well I was suppose to go out in the field today, but internal conflict has pushed that back but before I knew that I thought it would be better for me to get my feet wet the day before rather than be thrusted into the field just like that. Besides I would be going with a tech to do the work not going by myself.

First there was the briefing in which the our security leader explained the travel route for the job ahead. He began explaining the exits and entrances to our location and the passenger seating arrangement. The he went into explaining the actions taken if one of our vehicles are disabled. First we would try to fix it if possible and if that wasn't possible then we would commandeer a vehicle from a LN (local national). Which believe it or not is within the guidelines of what we can and can not do. If it gets to a point that we can not get out we have the right to take a car from someone driving by to escape. The interesting thing about this is the Iraqi who just lost there automobile can report to there point of contact (I believe its the minister of transportation) and then receive that car back fixed for free, or get a brand new car on our dime (ours being the US tax payers).

I was a little bit nervous at first and didn't know what to expect. The site I went to was Dawodi which only happens to be 4 miles away from where we are, but it is worlds apart when you leave past ECP1 (exit control points) or Check Point 1 is what you may here on the news. That is the Gate from airport to the other side heading to Baghdad. I will admit I was somewhat in amazement not because I like the risk or wish for imminent life threatening situations, but because all of the Iraqi people were carrying on like there wasn't anything to worry about. There were women driving their kids to school (or what it looked like anyway) people driving to work, carpooling, driving alone you name it. I was in complete disbelief that I was in the same universe that they were in. Here I am in my vest along with everyone in the car with 8 armed security personnel with fully automatic weapons ready to take on anything that came their way. All the while here were other people that lived in this situation everyday with no protection for them other that their belief in their savior.

After a very quick drive up the highway, which looked like any other normal highway, we quickly exited onto a side street where the sidewalks were poorly maintained and there was trash all over the place. Rock and debris cover parts of the street making them hazards to go around. Not many people covered the streets which made it very eerie to drive down just to think what could happen. My eyes were wide open and I looked in every direction for something or someone suspicious. When we got there we had to wait for them to open the gate which only intensified my anxiety (if that is the right word to use). Once inside our security detail spread out and covered the area and there were at least 2 guys within 10 feet of us at all times. We were surrounded by a ten foot wall which made me feel a little bit more secure.

Once we got started I soon learned what I already knew, when it comes to something that involves a computer I can do it. We sat there for longer than I would have wished, but it was because of my instructor that we did. I personally would have left an hour or 2 before we actually did, but that's just me. As much as I have gone thru trouble shooting with computers, Xboxes and everything else electronic I know when to say when. You can only beat your head on the wall so many times before you knock yourself out.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to live under a gun for most of my life. And the worst part about it is to think that there was someone in a car ready to kill someone all for what they believe in and to die trying, or kill themselves to obtain that goal. And again all the while normal everyday people go to work, school, or whatever they do knowing full well that they may be at the receiving end of an insurgent attack. Casualties of war is what they call it. Pardon me for saying so, but there just isn't any other way to describe it other than it's a damn shame. None the less I made it there and back and as much as my fam does not want me to leave the safety of my cave (nor do I) I will be leaving again to do more work outside the BIAP. Have faith in the MAN above and stay prayerful.

Love Always,

Still Safe, but Still here

I was suppose to go to the Green Zone on yesterday, but we had some other jobs going on so they pushed the PM back to Sunday. I am told that I will work my shift (12-6 minus 2 hours) and then do 2 PM's that will take 2-3 hours to do a piece. Talk about a full days work man I will be exhausted by the end of the day. Got to do what you got to do thankfully I will have learned more in that short time than I have since I've been here. The funny thing is I have been getting emails and calls in regards to jobs back in the States. Unfortunately for them I won't be able to grace them with my presence (just kidding).

No but seriously when I leave here I hope to spend every (almost every) waking moment with my wife. As much as she gets on my nerves and as much as I can't stand some things she does I couldn't even imagine what life would be without her. To coin a phrase "If loving her is wrong, then I don't wanna be right". Actually that would be song lyrics, but you get the idea. So my main goal has been to provide a stable future with what I make here so that I won't run into the same problems E and I have had in the not so far past.

here's to the Future

And what ever it may bring.

Under new Management...?!?!

As many of you already know MCI is looking to get bought out by another company. The last thing I heard was Verizon was going to take them over. Which is something I welcome, because that would possibly mean different management that would know what GSM means (Global Systems for Mobile communications) and also know what the CC on an email means (inside joke). I have never liked working for someone that doesn't have the slightest clue what you do. How can you manage a person approipately if you can't even comprahend what it is they do. A lot of people would disagree with me, but that is just how I feel and I don't mean they have to know my job in and out, but can they at least understand when we say there is nothing we can do from here (uh duh we have to go to the site).

So when I was back in Dallas they were rumors going on about this by out when I went up to the office and one guy said they were going to offer 3 weeks for every year of service (basically trimming the fat Again). I wonder if Thte Big V even knows whats going on over here? This is the one thing that is making money for this company not to mention a long term goverment project that will go on for years to come. Trust me I won't be here to see the end of it. They told us the other day that all the contractors with the exception of us switch guys are going over to the new camp, and that this location would be where the LN's would stay and receive training. If you haven't read my earlier post about my good old dearly departed friend Jack then you won't understand why I have a problem with that. I can only hope it will work itself out in the end...

Speaking of the end.....

Cinco De Mayo...

Not too much has been going on here we had a pretty good wake up call today with a mortar attack at the airport. The point of impact sounded close, but it wasn't. It was however close enough to cause a lack of power for a few seconds. When it sounds like an attack is close we are suppose to go into the common area which just so happens to be a building with 18inch thick walls. Well after the first hit which sounded very close, I started to go the breakroom (common area) when Ray L. (the project manager) said don't come out (who himself happened to be out). I then said "shouldn't we go to the break room, because these CON-Xs aren' going to be much protection if we happened to get shelled". So he had a kind of "oh ya your right" look on his face and we proceeded.

On the way there all the people in the yard were looking for the point of impact and taking pictures. I like explosions just as much as the next guy, but generally speaking I prefer them in my movies, not in my real life. A mortar doesn't have to land on you in order to do its damage. One could land 100 feet away and the resulting concussion or shrapnel could be your demise. This attack, all though wasn't that close, has been the closest attack to us by far. We can almost always here the carbombs and rocket attacks and every once in a while can hear small arms fire (gun battles). However it has never had any effect on us directly considering the attacks, generally speaking, are miles away from us.

So while you go out and have a few drinks for happy hour, or just sit back and enjoy a movie at home, just remember those that don't have those simple luxuries (namely I mean our troops not myself) and ask yourself what can I do for them. One thing is for sure being over here will give you a definite appreciation for home and what we have been blessed with. Whether or not you support Bush, or even believe in war is really irrelevant. Our troops are here because they are told to not because they want to and we should support them every way we can as much as we can. Sorry to go off on a tangent...

Trim the Fat.... Lose the Dead Weight

At the start of my shift Ray (the guy that got me the job) said that they are going to trim the fat. Basically meaning they are going to continue to lay off people until we are back to a skeleton crew. He mentioned that since I don't do too much more than what I was brought here to do that I would be first on the list of the four switch guys. He also mentioned that this was months away from happening, but in all honesty he would rather keep me than the other 2 guys, because of my switch knowledge (which again was why I was brought here) but I still need to learn the other equipment.
I have no problem with learning new equipment even though I was hired for something specific. The issue with this is most of the time that I would need to work on this other equipment it would be outside the protected area of BIAP. This also isn't a problem for me, but the way this place is being ran is. I truly feel that the management here are about the most unsafe group of individuals this side of the planet. Which just goes back to my belief that you put your employees first the outcome will be well worth it.

Anyway I will be going out to do a PM (preventative maintenance) on either Friday or Saturday. It is a part of the on going endeavor to cross train everyone to do everyone's job so that they can maximize our work output (work us like slaves basically). I am also beginning to wonder if we are really getting all the work done we could in a weeks time and if so how much would it really hinder to have 1 day off during the week. I think that our work effort would be a little better with a little time off now and again. I could be mistaken, but we will never know will we....

Another Day in Paradise

Well not much has happened today, and I guess we can always be thankful for that. I'm not sure if it's just me, but I don't care to listen/watch the news in regards to here, because I feel its such a downer. I think the worse thing a person can do being over here is to have the knowledge of all things happening over the land. The news has become such a harbinger of bad things that its better not to watch it and say you did. At least with the internet news they have stories that one may find interesting that has nothing to do with war or destruction.

My whole point of saying that was there was a guy here that's been here all of a week that mentioned an attack that killed several people yesterday so I stopped him where he started and mentioned how unhealthy it is to think about such things. I don't do it to make my self oblivious to what is going on it just isn't something one should dwell on and if you are constantly watching the news then you will do just that. This also applies to you there back home. Get your news from me I guarantee you it will be much more uplifting and you still get the same affect. ALIVE FROM BAGHDAD ITS ME... Get it Alive from Baghdad, ya well gotta lighten up the air every once in a while.

Have a good day family (friends are my family too)

First Week Back Long Road Ahead

7 days in 82 out.

that's when I leave to go to MY bro's wedding back in the P. I wasn't going to come home til the last week in August, because as some of you know that is The Dubs wedding anniversary. The funny thing is I have missed so many family events since I have been over here and now its almost May already. To think that I have spent a quarter of a year in a foreign land just blows me away. Especially since I want so much to be home with my loved ones, but more importantly my WIFE. I have excepted the fact that I will be gone for most events this year with the thought that I will never have to again so long as I live.

Well a couple of guys came back from different locations outside of Baghdad, one guy Paw Paw just got back from Fallujah which just so happens is only like 20 miles north from Baghdad, but the route from here to there is so dangerous that our own security detail couldn't go pick him up. So he went down there to do a job that took all of 4 hours, but had to wait for the next convoy which was 5 days out. So for 5 days he was stuck there with nothing to do as far as work and not much else in the way of entertainment. So on his way back today he was in the lead Hummer with the convoy group heading back toward Baghdad when an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) went off right underneath them lifting one side of the huge vehicle off the ground a few feet. Well the army quickly responded with the 50 CAL killing three and a cow as well (just for good measure Paw Paw said). To give you an idea for those that don't know a 50 CAL bullet is roughly the length of your hand from your wrist to the top of your finger and about the thickness of a permanent marker (the big ones).

Fortunately (GOD Bless IT) no one was injured in the HUM-V thanks be to the man as well as some very thick armor plating that now covers most of the military vehicles here in Iraq. Paw Paw said that even after he got back his ears were still ringing from the explosion. There are a few stories around the camp about people in this group getting into attacks and living to tell the tale. It makes for interesting conversation, but I don't wish to be the one that has a story to tell. I feel just fine telling their stories for them. I find it also interesting, because I believe it is also a show of the Almighty's protection over us if you believe in that sort of thing I know I do.

Love
and GOD Bless

Farewell My Good Friend JACK...

What I am about to tell you I have know for some time, but didn't really feel like talking about it. Well as you may or may not recall we had a dog here at the complex and his name was Jack. He was a playful pup that has got here right about the time I did. Well those that know me know I love animals (save your jokes for later please) and so I grew attached to the lil pup.

Jack use to have a habit of barking all thru the night so while I was working nights I would take it upon myself to put him in my room so he would disturb the whole camp. Jack would often times grab my socks or a pair of boxers and run outside with them just beggin me to chase after him and as always I did. Then it became a tug-o-war match with my clothing the rope as well as the grand prize.

Jack didn't really care for the "LN's"(Local Nationals) that stayed at our camp. Iraqi Muslims consider dogs a dirty disgusting creature which I find really interesting considering there lack of cleanliness themselves. Well jack would always growl, nip, bite, and bark at people he wasn't familiar with as well as the LN's. Well none of the LN's would have anything to do with Jack and a few times he would have them running for cover, which I will admit would some times be amusing.

Well right before I got back I emailed a buddy of mine that was on leave as well to see when he was getting back. That's when I found out about my dear ole pal Jack. He said it was a good thing I wasn't there, because jack died and it is believed that he was poisoned. After getting back I then learned that he suffered for like 3 days before he died and someone mentioned rat poison as having that effect on larger animals. Sergeant Major (my Boss) was so bothered and wanting to end Jacks pain that he talked to the manager about putting him down. When he was finally given the ok to do so he went over to Jack and he was already dead.

No as tragic as this was this make me very uncomfortable living with people I don't know, can't communicate with, and have no idea what there allegiances are and to whom. If someone is willing to kill a harmless dog that at the very worse is nip you a bit then who's to say that they wouldn't do the same for someone they might have a serious disagreement with. I take comfort that Jack is in a better place, but he will be missed. I also take comfort in the fact that GOD is my protector and as long as that is the case I will be alright (with a little common sense and a careful eye as well).

Let is not forget Jack the faithful Mutt...

"Your Fired...."

I feel like I'm TV sometimes with the way things happen around here. "40 people living together in one complex while we weed out the weak ones leaving only the strong. Tune in next week for the next exciting tale of A JOB IN BAGHDAD."

I have only been back for 4 days and in that time we have lost or will lose in a day or so a total of 5 employees. Not to mention a few more within the coming week or 2. No only that, but we are losing some of the best people. The latest in this great number or "To Be Fired" is someone that has been here for 16 months and is one of the hardest workers here.

This place is falling apart at the seems and I truly believe its time for a manager overhaul. I can imagine that the workers are collectively messups while the managers are doing a reasonable job. That's the problem with Corp life it is always the same, more concerned about making more money than doing the right thing the right way. I will NEVER own, or operate under the same umbrella as a corporation. No matter what my people will be my first investment and primary concern. But enough about that I haven't eaten yet...

Day 2 on the Job

I didn't get as much rest as I did yesterday, but I feel good none the less. The let another guy go today and didn't even have the guts to tell him before he left for break today. He went to the airport today and got on a plane to go back to Sri Lanka and after he left the packed his stuff in foot locker in preparation to send to him. They didn't even have the decency to tell him before he left. That was one of the things I was concerned about before I left, not because my performance was bad or anything, but I was having an issue with the current manager a few weeks before I left. After many headbutts and ill conversations I finally just decides to do my job go to my room and stay out of sight. Well it paid off, because right before the manager in question left (they do a rotation 2 months on 2 off) he commended me on my work and said he noticed a improvement in my attitude (ya right...). Basically I wasn't going to let him or anyone take from me what I believe was my blessing so I let bygones be bygones and just stayed out of the path of danger.

I often wonder what this place would be like if there wasn't so much havoc. Surprisingly enough there are flowers and shrubbery growing everywhere. I am also told that some flowers are resilient enough to last the harsh summers. I guess that's why they call it a desert flower... I still have a bit more to talk about, but I will bore you later with that.

Back At the Scene

If you know what I mean. Well I am back on the job as of midnight and I think I should be ok. Recovering from a journey like the one I just got back from can take some time, but I thinking I am rested enough that I will work through it. I went to the court today to see if they were playing, but no one showed up so I shot around for about a half hour and then left. It was about 105 degrees when I left at 3pm and man it is hot. I feel for or military, because they still have to wear full military fatigues. Can you imagine wearing knee high socks, a tee shirt, pants and a long sleeve shirt not to mention a 20-30 pound vest and helmet, boots and weapon and its gonna get even worse up into the 140's I'm told.

Yesterday we had a little get together at the new camp grounds. That's when the drunks can drink without restriction and call it having a good time. One guy that has only been here for 2-3 weeks got in a car and was looking for something to do and got in a wreck. He was arrested by the MP's thrown in the stockade and when the manager went to get him out they took him straight to the PAX terminal and sent him home. Didn't even let him come back to pack his stuff. That's real cold hearted, but the price you pay for a stupid mistake.

Well all is well I haven't heard any attacks since I got here which is ok by me even though it took me awhile to get adjusted to that back home. I love you all and Ill talk to you soon.

Back At It

Well my time has come and gone and there were several people I didn't get a chance to visit with. Too many to mention, but you know who you are and GOD willing I will see you on my next trip home. I was busy from the day I got back and up and at it non-stop. I have learned one valuable thing thru my time home.

RELAX

Ya I definitely could have relaxed a whole lot more than I did, but like I said lesson learned. Well now that I am back on the Travel track I will be updating regularly once again.

One thing before I sign off and that is I really have found new love for people thru my travels. As you go and deal with people on a daily basis you begin to wonder if there are any more kind souls in this world and I'm here to say there there is. I thank all of those that I have met from here to there and the kind words during our short, but very good conversations. As I was going thru the checkpoint Mrs. Dubs and I had our last farewells and he said where is my kiss. I laughed and was actually going to call Mrs. Dubs Back to entertain him for a brief sec, but opted against. I mentioned that I needed the extra smootches, cause I had much further to go. Once I mentioned where he said wow and asked me my name and said he would say a prayer for me everyday. I unfortunately didn't get his name, but I wished I would have and as we parted to said be safe and take care. I must admit it warmed my heart greatly for a complete stranger to express himself the way he did. The response that I have gotten has been overwhelming and I just want to thank all of those strangers, family, and friends alike. Your words despite your desire for me NOT to do this helps make it that much easier.

So now I'm back at it.....

San Antonio "Sea World Texas Style"

For my very last weekend in Texas My wonderful wife and I came up with the idea of going to San Antonio. So we rented a van and gathered up all the folks and went for a drive. MB and myself drove the distance which only took us about 4 and a half hours which we pretty much split it up evenly between us. We left late evening on Friday and got there roughly around 1:30am. We got up had breakfast and went to Sea World and had a blast. After 2 attempts I finally got to pet the dolphins which for me was the best thing there. After it was all said and done we went back to the hotel and got cleaned up and went downtown to the Riverwalk. We walked for a bit then took a boat tour thru the river and as usual it came with a little history. I think everyone at this time was dragin so we got something to eat and headed back to the hotel. After a very good restful night we checked out the hotel and headed to San Marcus for a little shopping. They have a very large outlet mall there with every store you can think of. Mrs. Dubs and left with a just a few items ya right... Then we headed home since most had to work on Monday. Real quick and easy, in and out, fun and back again. Again somewhere I would like to spend more time at, but maybe next time. I want to thank all of those that went on our little weekend excursion, you all made it that much more enjoyable. Much love to my mother-in-law and her "all in attitude" it is refreshing to take a trip without debate. Well we have pics and I'll post them once I get them processed.

April 9th Dual Purpose

I didn't really get to spend too much time in Dallas as I would have liked, but I used my time wisely. Mrs. Dubs and I went to P-Town for my Uncle Ty's wedding and I was very glad I was able to make it. I thank them for keeping me in mind when selecting a date. I was also able to show everyone the Mrs. Dubs really does exist and isn't just a figment of my imagination. The day after the wedding we spent some time with my lil sister, my younger cousin and my nieces. We went to Chuck E Cheese and I think we had a pretty good time. I unfortunately didn't get to play any ball or spend any real time with my bestman and soon to be groom. I only hope I can fit the part as well as he did for me. I look forward to this July when I will be able to play my part.

It also was my sisters birthday although I wasn't able to spend any time with her or even talk to her for that matter. She texted me and I called back, but we missed each other. We will have to try again later.

Jamaica Pt 2

Just a little update on what we did in beautiful Jamaica. Well the weekend was filled with sun and fun and I was we were as happy as can be. Mrs. Dubs and I went to Nagril and she actually went wind surfing with me... It actually is a lot different than you would think it is really calm and peaceful up there. After that I went cliff diving and boy was it a rush. We went to Pirates Cove when legend has it pirates use to hide in these caves to keep from getting caught by the royal navy. When you jump from the cliff there is a cave right behind you and you have to swim into it to get back up. Very cool... And on the very last day Mrs. Dubs and I took a carriage ride into town with a guided tour. Very informative and probably the best thing we did while we were there (other than eat and drink). All in all not as long as I wished but worth it none the less. I highly recommend it for a future vacation for everyone out there.

Jamaica Mon

Been some time since I posted so I decided to let everyone know I am still alive and having a good time. Mrs. Dubs found some good rates to Jamaica so we decided to take a quick trip this weekend. We had a blast up to the last few hours we were here and it was well worth it. I wouldn't mind staying longer, but the Mrs. has to work and we still have a lot to do before our trek to P-Town. Lots of love peeps and see some of ya real soon.

Home Again... Yee Haw...

Well its almost 5 in the morning on the 25th and I am very excited to be back. I was a little restless at first adjusting to my surroundings and felt very out of place, but I have gotten use to it now. The funny thing is I have already begun to appreciate everything that I didn't before. While we were driving to breakfast the other day I found myself staring into space many times just looking at the trees and grass you know little stupid stuff. I didn't sleep well the night before, but I am well rested now and set to go, wait a minute its 5 am oh ya, uh let me go back to bed and Ill get cheery again in a few hours.

Mrs. Dubs has done a lot to make my homecoming very comfortable and I thank her for it dearly. I can't say I express my gratitude to her as well as I would like, but what can I say we're married :). E and I went to dinner with our best friends last night and their 2 daughters (my nieces) and with the exception of the noisy people (Was at Cheddars on 635) I had a good time. The one thing that let me know is I haven't fully adjusted yet, but I am sure that will pass soon enough. So we came back home and chatted for a bit and I showed them some things I brought back from Baghdad. After that I laid down and crashed hard. I look forward to everyday here and am very thankful to be back safe and sound. I will admit I do find myself still not being very trusting of my surroundings and that worries me a bit. I keep looking for garbage trucks (small joke).

I think its just like when I first got to Baghdad it just doesn't seem real. That feeling faded soon enough and hopefully it will here too. Well I am going to try and lay down for a bit more since E is still in La La land. Lots to do so little time I WILL make the most of it. BTW C-land your XBoX looks great Mrs. Dubs helped me pick out a good color, so you owe her big time....

Amsterdam Pt 2

Well I have safely made it out of the Middle east and now am in the ever so rude Europe (another post for another time). Man I haven't been as nervous or scared since I have been here like I was leaving from Baghdad. The airport is really run down and not well taken care of which gives me a lot of concern for the upkeep of their planes as well. But in all honesty that really wasn't my biggest concern or fear.

If you can remember I spoke briefly on our travel from Kuwait to Baghdad Via the military C-130. Well there is a lot of fear of enemy fire on planes leaving and coming to Baghdad so there are certain ways the planes must take off and land. Well this was a power take off with a spiral climb. Most that have traveled have been in a power take off, but I don't think anyone has been in a spiral climb. Basically the pilot begins to turn the craft immediately after take off and begins to climb at top speed in a spiral motion. This makes it hard for the plane to be a target since it isn't going in a straight line. So one wing is pointing straight up in the air and the other straight down toward the ground. Not my preferred way for them to take off, but it is a necessity that I will live with. Once they have reached a safe altitude then they straighten out and cut back on the engines and hit cruise mode. It was a very tense moment and it wasn't until I got to Jordan that I really felt safe. Even then I wasn't as comfortable as I would have liked to be, but that's just the reality of where I have been sticking with me and I am glad it keeps me on my toes.

Once in Amman I found it to be absolutely beautiful and was very glad to be there. The best way I can describe it was like going to an area with lots ruins thousand of years old and then someone just decided to add the ease of western civilization. Not only that but it was a very lush green area on top of a dessert plain. Absolutely mind boggling and very beautiful. I took quite a few pictures and once I am home I will post them. I have to say to myself all the time I am one blessed individual to be able to travel the world on the company dime. Those that can remember I have always wanted to travel every since I was young (I mean like as in single digit young :). Once I was employed with Ericsson it was like a dream come true, explore the world, but get paid to do it. Once I got married that dream never faded, but was less important, because I found what I needed in Texas. The beauty of it is though my darling wife likes to travel too, so it wasn't as if I had to change my plans of world exploration I just have to convince her of WHY we should go Africa other than the fact they have big cats that I like. Anyway went through the struggle of unemployment and was once again blessed with a job supplying me the chance to venture into the world at no cost to myself. And since that time I have been to 4 different countries, six different cities and 3 different cultural backgrounds all at no cost to me. Well if that isn't a blessing then I don't know what is. I thank GOD everyday for his continuing protection over me and the chance to fulfill my dreams just as I had wished for. I always knew I would travel the world I just wasn't EVER sure how I was going to, nor where I was going to go. All I wanted to do was explore the world and the MAN up stairs said ok here you go here is you itinerary have a safe trip. Here is to dreams whatever they maybe and to the one and only that can make them happen...

Momma fear not be proud
Pray for my safety and smile
I am blessed to do what I have wished for
To go around the world and explore
The wonders that HE has provided
A dream has become reality
For that I will always say aloud
It is the almighty that has made me what I am
giving me the talent, time and experience
Not to mention a great many examples to learn from
Aunts and Uncles, Parents and Grandparents
All a direct result of who I am today
A man on a journey fulfilling his destiny
One day at a time, one plane at a time
Be careful what you ask for
I am living proof it will be given
Thank GOD for that and so much more......

90 Days In IRAQ

Well that time has come and gone and it has been officially 90 days, but here is a little something you didn't know. Although I have been in Iraq for 90 days and will be for one more, I have been away from home since the 17th of December. Which is beyond the 90 Days Away From home mark. This will be the last work day for me till I catch my flight on tomorrow. Short hop here, quick stay here, here a hop there a hop and Dallas a little bit before the days end. Yes to answer anyone question I AM EXCITED......!!!!!

Well to help pass the time, so it doesn't slow down on me, and to prepare me for a grueling workout once I get home I went to the courts today at the base. I had a pretty good run all things considered (out of shape and broken down). Won 2 games lost 2, but not in that order and for just a moment I was home again on the courts, playin with some of my boys it was a very tranquil moment and I was very, very relaxed (still conscious to my surroundings), but then BOOM... Well there goes my tranquil moment, and I don't know if I just wasn't listening before, but I don't think there were any explosions till that point.

On another topic the Iraqi Dinar is on its way up. I think you should check out this link: Iraqi Dinar and seriously think about investing. The Iraqi Dinar has gone up 25% since the new bills came out in October of 2003. All the details are on the website, but if there was ever a good investment that would be the one. Well not really to much else going on it has been pretty quiet here lately and I'll be home before you know it.

To the one that travels the world in search of
The journey of a lifetime and the experience
That nothing else can bring you
To see it for yourself in all it's glory
Be free and let ambition take over
Take a chance and let the wind carry you
You will be pleased this I guarantee...

Uh what's The Title Again....?

You know I actually have grown very fond of the title of my blog, but it pretty much will have no meaning after Monday (90 Days In Iraq). So I have been trying to think of a new name for my second tour over here and can't really think of a good one that is as catchy as the one I have. I know, I know I could be worrying about something else other than the name of my blog, but it's just one of those things that can throw me off and it's like a lil nat in my ear "shoo fly". I'm sure I will think of something eventually.

Anyway when I went to the airport day before yesterday to get my ticket the guard at the checkpoint right before you get to the airport said: "Ah-Salam-Malakim" to me as I entered and of course my reply was... "Hi you doin". What you thought I was going to say Malakim Salam? (lol) Well anyway the guy was like: "you speak english" I said: "uh ya" then he said: "you are American" , you get the gist of it. Anyway he said that he thought I was an Iraqi and then started on my camera about how nice it was, how bout you just say you want it and leave it at that. Well anyway my thought was that if he made the mistake of thinking I was a native then the same could be true to everyone else here. Well I decided that I wasn't willing to take a risk with some of these people here so I headed to the barbershop yesterday morning. What does a 3 dollar haircut look like...? Well Ill show you... :)

Love and peace

Waring label Posted by Hello

Don't worry the sign is mostly for insurgents, stray dogs, dingos and lawyers. Besides this is just their way of saying stay out. Harsh I'll admit, but they get the point... Oh Ya and Really Big Rats...

I don't think this tower is up to code, but I'll check and see... This is the last bit of remnance of Saddam's empire. This is an old guard tower near the airport, but Im not sure if it was recently put to waste or if it has been for some time. Guess we will never know.......

Ah Yes the location of our new camp yet again. I just wanted to show you the beauty of what this country has to offer. Well sorta anyway not sure about the resale value, but land is very abundant although I dont think you can grow much here so farms and trailer parks are out of the question. Did I say that out loud.....

Terminal C Posted by Hello

I bet you can't guess what the sign says...

Yes Thats correct Terminal C how did you know...?!

Airport Any One....?!

BIAP (Baghdad International AirPort) Posted by Hello

Well I have been trying to get my plane ticket (first leg) for the past 5 days or so and every time I go to the airport they tell me their system is down. I'm beginning to wonder if it is ever UP. Well today was no exception for the lack of system connectivity, but I WAS able to get my tickeet anyway. I finally remembered this time to bring my camera so I could take a picture of the airport. I tried to take a picture in the terminal, but was quickly stopped by airport security and show the very small sign on the wall "No Pictures in the Terminal". Right thats the first thing I look for when I go to the airport a very small sign telling me what NOT to do. Sorry missed that one.

The Days Are Getting Short

Well I wont go into details, but I ALMOST didn't have a flight home like I thought I did. All thanks go to the Mrs. and her scrutiny when it comes to our funds. I for sure have a ticket, the only problem now is its not here with me, but it will be (I hope). Other than that I am more anxious as the time goes by. 2 weeks ago I was happy that I was coming home, but could have stayed a few more weeks. Now I cant wait to get out of here...

I plan on taking some pictures tomorrow so you can have something to see other than my continuous banter. Till then keep you head down... I mean I will :)

84 Days in Iraq

I have been in Iraq for 84 days as of today and will be home in 8. I have become a more rounded individual after being here and have learned to appreciate things from a more humble position than I had gotten use to. Man to think that when I started this journey I didn't have the slightest idea what was in store for the most part. I had done some research and calculated the numbers and estimated and calculated, but when it was all said and done logic and reason are thrown out the door. Because when your sitting in your room and your feel the concussion of a near by explosion reality sets in and the numbers don't matter any more.

I am thankful for a great many things, but none more than my family. I had said to my Aunt Ka Ka, that even though I am as far away as we have ever been that we seem to be closer than ever before. In some ways that's true just by the manor of our conversations. The first quarter of 2005 has proven to be a very interesting one to say the least. But the beginning of the second is the one I am looking forward to now. The time where I come home and sleep next to my wife (instead of the dog J/K), visit my family, attend a wedding and hopefully enjoy a good vacation somewhere sunny and warm with a nice oceanview.

Here's to Ocean Views...

What Is The Right Thing To Do

Was talking with a co-worker yesterday about the types of people we have here. Somehow we got on the topic of Saddam's sons and how they died during the war. Now I personally didn't know how they were killed, but the guy I was talking to seemed to know a little bit about it. Well the discussion got to Saddam's grandson who was like twelve if I'm not mistaken. Well at the time they were attacking the palace where the sons were and after it was said and done the 12 year old grandson was shooting at the troops. From the discussion he said they were just going to wait him out and take him hostage, but when it became apparent that he was going to give up any time soon and that he had enough ammo to wait it out longer than the military would be willing to do they had no choice but to shoot him. The thought came to me would I be able to shoot a child to save my own life and if so how would this affect me. I couldn't dream of killing someone no matter how mad I have been in my life. Well the guy I was talking to said that because of his military training he could do it without hesitation. I told him that if I had to I believe I could to, but I hope and pray that I never have to make that decision.

Another thing came to mind in kinda related to this situation. I am sure you have heard of the recent bombing that was done with a garbage truck. Well our garbage collectors and anyone that isn't a DOD (Department Of defense) contractor has to be escorted in our complex. How safe would you really feel knowing that your garbage man could be a possible insurgent just waiting for his chance. I think to myself about never having to worry about the garbage man and can't wait till I am home so I don't have to look over my shoulder at everyone near and far. The smallest things in this world mean the most. Granted not everyone in the US is a sane individual and some times caution is warranted, but you can't imagine the unease I get some times. I reach for my hip wishing I had my weapon, but there isn't one then I look around for the best exits and the best place for cover. This isn't how I feel all the time and I am in the safest place possible, but one thing is for sure here you are only as safe as you feel. From the immortal word of Tiny: "It's better to have and not need than to need and not have".

Coming home will be a strange transition.....

Let There Be Light

Well for the first time in three days the sun is out finally. It has been a very cold, wet, and gloomy place here. Well its still wet and cold, but at least the sun is out and there isn't any visible sign of rain coming any time soon. I can hear the birds chirping outside as the sun begins to rise for the day. I didn't think my life would change so much just by me coming here for such a short time, but it has. Some for the good, some for the not so good. I can't even fathom what the next few months is going to be like for once the future is so apparent. I have to admit a level of uncertainty not know what's in store for me, but I also have a level of excitement. GOD has watched over me and for that I am forever grateful. I can only wonder what his "DIVINE PLAN" for me is, but I think I am up for the task.

At least I hope so

Diamond in the Rough Posted by Hello
I thought I would share my artistic side by showing one of my pics. This little piece of grass grows right in front of the door to the switch where we work. I have to admit that this little piece of grass from time to time has the power to make me smile. "The grass IS greener on the other side", the other side of the world (lol). Boy I crack myself up some times, but in honesty its true and this is just something else that GOD has shown me that I can appreciate.

The G-Man

Tiny I Weal Sowy Posted by Hello

This is Tiny the mechanic for the G-State where 2 of my lovely Aunts reside. He is really a great guy despite the dumb look on his face (LOL). But seriously he has been over here 18 months, from the beginning, and has seen more things than you or I can imagine. He is planning on leaving soon (for good) and he will be missed you better believe it.

Much love to you Big T

When it Rains it Pours...

Well this is you weather update for Baghdad today, Rainy all day with no visible indication that the sun is still there (lol). It has been raining for 2 days straight now. It will die down a bit then pick back up again, but it hasn't stopped since it started. The rain kinda acts a lot like it does in Texas really doesn't have anywhere to go so it make big puddles and really thick mud. But one thing is for sure the mud isn't the same. Here the sand is as fine as baby powder so when it rains the mud is like toothpaste, very sticky and hard to get through. The funny thing is though when it dries all you have to do is shake it off like dust. This has been you daily Baghdad Weather report.

Have a nice Day,

My First Midnight Shift

Since the elections things have been a little bit quieter than usual, but not completely silent. See when there is no sound is when you begin to worry and wonder when is it gonna happen. I can remember the first few nights I worked 3rd shift here after only being here for about 2 weeks. See it was right around the beginning of the year and I still wasn't use to being in all honesty. Having to wear a vest to the chow halls, then vest and helmets and back to vest again. See unless you have worn a helmet before it can be a bit weird at first. The only way I can describe it is like being so tired you can barely hold your head up and that's what its like wearing a helmet. Anyway so here I am working at 12 midnight by myself in the middle of a warzone. Now at first I use to leave the door open so I could see what was going on, not that I could see much even then, but it made me feel a little better. But after hearing a few rockets and mortars I quickly shut the door. Now Iraq has to be the darkest place I have ever been in this world. The bases don't use lights for fear of giving the insurgents something to aim for this is true with all the places here as well. So working at night for the first time hearing every little sound there is, but devoid of your normal cricket chirps or whatever you may be use to. It didn't help my peace of mind that we had the cameras in the switch room staring into the dark unknown. Suffice to say I closed the door and locked it for the first 3 nights I was on 3rd shift.

With everything they tell you before you get over here there is a deep fear that can only be matched by the best of horror films. You feel so venerable that you want to sleep with your vest on, but it just doest go well with the covers and helmet lol. You begin to wonder when and if something is going to land right on top of you, and I can't really remember when, but you stop worrying about it. I began to realize that I was safer than my mind lead me to believe and they want you to have a since of fear when you first get here so you don't forget where you are and thing your in the Bahamas or something. I have to admit the way they get you ready for Iraq is very interesting and it definitely worked in my case. I feel safe most of the time, but I am forever aware that there is a war being fought just a few feet away.

A lot of people believe that its a religious war, some believe we are fighting for better prices, but basically we are fighting for the sake of it now, because we don't have a choice. When or lose the US has there hands full and if we decided to pull out now the whole world would look down on us for leaving Iraq in such a chaotic state. Better for us to stick it out and make better whatever we can. The funny thing is I have always thought about the future and what it has in store for me, but as of late I cant see past the next week. I mean I have an idea what I want to do, but what exactly I will be doing when I leave here is another story all together....

Peace and Love peeps

No Rest For The Weary....

When I was first told that I would be working 7 days a week for three months straight with not a single day off I thought I would go mad. To my surprise I became accustomed to the daily grind on a weekly basis and haven't had much of a struggle coming to work. Now mind you work is slow and my job is the easiest I have had in my life, but sitting in a office day after day for 8-10 hours each day can pick at you. I am thankful that it isn't the case with me. Don't get me wrong I would love a day where I would have absolutely nothing to do, but whatever it is I wish. None the less I have gotten use to working everyday and truly can appreciate a regular 9-5 or better still 7-3.

We have a lot more people than a month ago and I some times like to just watch them and see their responses. I'm not sure why people feel they have to act tough I'm a situation like the one we are in, but I see a lot of ego and attitude from some of the new people. I have no qualms about showing or even telling someone I am truly scared at times being here. And I consider myself a trooper one that can do just about anything if given the opportunity. I see people brag about this or suggest that their spouse really can't deal with them being here. I find that women are very strong creatures maybe even stronger than men. At any rate I think it's just their way of dealing with where we are and what is happening around us. Because I will be honest with you I have come to the realization that there isn't a single soul here tougher than that guy with a bomb strapped to his chest looking for a big target so he can go out in a blaze of glory.

Our Security detail has been getting more backup with a wide range of people from all around the world. British special forces guys, US special ops, French Foreign Legion, SWAT, you name it they have done it or seen it and live to tell the tale. I could have a blog that just specifically talked about their exploits and enough to talk about for years to come. They try to keep their distance so that it won't affect them as much if something happens. Nothing worse than having to watch a friend die while you were trying to protect them. I try to respect their wish or desire and not socialize too much with them, but I am truly fascinated by these people. I have befriended a few of them, but yet I still try to keep my distance and not bother them or invade their space. Which is probably the most important thing to people here "privacy". And that is a hard thing to come buy when you share a room or live right next to a guy literally just a foot or 2 away from where you lay your head. None the less we manage and I think me personally I will become a stronger person because of it. Rant over for now catch you on the flip side.

Animals Are Among Us

You know how many people can actually say to themselves I know what kind of wildlife is going to be in Iraq. See although you see SOME images of what Iraq looks like in all honestly you have no REAL depiction of what Iraq is really like. Take for instance who would have ever thought that there would be foxes or dingos running around Baghdad Airport. Or that the nations aviator would be a common fly (j/k but boy do I hate them flies). Not to mention who would imagine that the temperature would drop to near freezing, and in some places in Iraq it even snowed. Funny side note as some of you know, but most don't, Suddam named everything after himself and while I was searching for my flight back home I would try to fly directly from Baghdad, which on some websites is still called Suddam International Airport. Anyway back to my discussion on top of all the wildlife you would think to be here, there was a bat flying around in our complex this evening. And by the looks of how he was flying he was getting his feast on (echolocation he he). I have always been enjoyed wildlife (insert joke here Mrs. Dub). An have often dreamed of owning certain wild animals I mean come on who wouldn't want a 500lbs tiger to play with. I can't wait till this summer where the temperatures get up to a brisk 150 degrees (in the shade). 40 lbs is the average weight loss from what I am told. Can't imagine what I would look like minus 40 lbs man that nasty...

Well lately it has been quiet or quite as some would say (inside joke). Last night I was going to go to the chow hall after my shift, but our boss that's here from the States said he really wish I wouldn't go, because there was a lot of activity going on. For instance we heard a fight jet covering our area for most of the late night and Bossman said he heard Bradleys (tanks) all night on the highway. So after that he continued to talk my ear off till 1:30am and by that time it was too late to go to mid-night chow. Well I didn't hear much after other than the wind that is. It was very windy last night with a slight chill. It's funny when I was overlooking the Bay of Kuwait you never would have thought while looking at something so beautiful that there is a war going on just an hour away. I am really curious what my reactions are going to be like when I get home. Not hearing explosions in the distance or the sounds of gunfire off in the distance. I sure hope I don't lose any sleep over it... There is an interesting thought loosing sleep over NOT hearing guns and bombs. What is this world coming to...

No Doubt About It...

As the title says no doubt about it... I am coming home on the 23rd of March for 4 weeks. Its funny actually when I was at my lowest point I was so ready to come home then I kinda said oh well and since then I have been fine and could stay for another month. But none the less I bought my ticket today and if you think about where I am and where I am going it isn't a bad deal.

I fly from Baghdad to Amman Jordan and have to stay over night. I am going to places of legend and bible stories. I had a conversation with someone the other day that didn't realize that the Babylon was here in Iraq and neither did I till I got here. I won't be able to give the full details of my travels, only because we are instructed not to, but I will post pictures and comments after my travel is complete. But I have been blessed to visit 2 more European countries that I have never been to. Not only that but the ticket is paid for by the company. What a way to explore the World on someone else's dime.

I think that every time I look for the bad the good keeps poppin up and slappin me in the face. Here's to all the blessings that I have taken for granted from time to time as we all have at least once in our life. To the journeys I have been on and to the ones in the future. To the all the good people I have been blessed to have met and continue to meet. To the good health that I had and do have. To lessons learned and most especially the ones I continue to learn. And last, but definitely not the least my family and friends that have been there through thick and then, most of all my wife. We don't always agree, but we have one thing in common and is the love we have for one another, for life, and for our families.

Always and Forever ME

Legal Debacle

I don't know if I mentioned it or not, but the second brother to get here has been let go. He got into an altercation with another guy and he pushed him down to the ground. Well the other guy didn't do anything to retaliate (not physically anyway) he just went to the management staff and told them of the incident. Well that night the brother, also know as J, started braggin about the confrontation to everyone at the fire barrel and well the next morning he was packing his bags.

He had exploded one other time in from of the guys before this situation arose, because one of the guys called him boy. This cat is from DC and from what I can gather he is trying (or was I should say) show everyone that he was the big dog on campus. I honestly didn't care for him too much, because one he had a big mouth, and secondly because I'm not to sure he knew how to tell the truth. Every time he opened his mouth something new came out and that's just talking about the same thing. I never made my feelings know, because I think he would have started the "I'm gonna check you game" and I don't play very well. We have a saying back in Dallas " Don't Talk About It, Be About It." Which simply put means let your actions speak for themselves, your mouth has no place. I try to live by that, by not braggin about my skills, or eluding to the fact that I am better than anyone else, now the key word there is try. Sometimes when the blood gets to flowin so does the ego.

The very next day The manager of my contracting company called me and asked my feelings on the situation and mentioned the fact that he would be seriously looking into it. Next thing you know J has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the lead company for racial discrimination. Now day before yesterday the manager from the states that threw the big party took the remaining 3 brothers to lunch and wanted to see where we stand. Well all of us for the most part agreed that J made the mistake of bringing his "Hood self" to Iraq and it got the better of him (along with the guy that instigated the confrontation, because he is still here and J is not). Well we went about our business and then the next day the manager from the states called me in to ask me something. Apparently the manager of our contracting company is spear heading the lawsuit or is working with J on it while they still have 20 employees on their payroll here in Iraq. Not only that but stated in the letter that we mentioned constant racial comments to management and they went ignored.

Well sufficed to say I was Pissed off beyond comparison. How is it you use my name, and he by slandering me, to push your issue that I have no vested interest nor anything to do with. I never said anything to anyone about agreeing with the actions of J, or that I felt uncomfortable due to racial discrimination. My name is apart of something I wish not to be apart of and is a lie within itself. Well I told the manager that what was written was a lie and that I had nothing to do with what they are talking about, but now I feel slided and wonder if it is necessary for me to take action against my contract company for the slander. The manager from the states advised us to let him take care of it, but I wonder if he will have our best interest at heart or his company's..?!?!

Here and Gone Tomorrow

I have been actually really busy for the past few days. One of the brothers was sent home a few days ago so they asked me to fill in for him till they could find a replacement. I didn't mind all too much it wasn't as if I was taking his job he made a stupid mistake and gave it up. His Bad...!! Well suffice to say that has since changed yet again and now I am back on second shift till I go home probably which is actually only 3 and a half weeks. Man my 90 days in Iraq is almost over and then a new chapter will begin once more when I return. I have learned a great deal and look forward to my time here till the very last day. I havae met some very interesting people and have gotten along with most of them. Few of them I would call friends in the states, but here I call them brothers. Becasue thats what they are and they are millions of people could care less about their family, but they still tolerate then and do the right thing most of the time. I can only imagine what the next 90 days will be like, at least I have an idea of what to look for when I return. Listen to me I sound as if Im leaving tomorrow. I will try to get some pictures up as soon as I can the photo program hasn't been working the last few times I tried.

Till then Hasta manana.

Party Over Here...

The head manager for the project has been here in Baghdad for the past 2 weeks give or take and he decided to put a team building yesterday. So all the employee's got together with the exception of a few, that arrived here today. In all we had about 50 people give or take and it wasn't to bad to be honest. I ended up callin it quits at about 9:30, but they carried on til 2am or so I am told. They started off by making some frozen drinks or actually really cold drink, because they couldn't freeze to well with all the alcohol and what not. Then they started in with the BBQ and a couple of Iraqi dishes. One was a big fish the size of a serving plate like the one you use for the turkey during Christmas or Thanks Giving only bigger. Then there was this lamb dish with 2 different kinds of rice and the rice had a very unusual, but good, taste that I couldn't really identify. I thought maybe it was cinnamon, but was told later that it was nutmeg. Well after the speeches from the managers and the constant country, they distributed Iraqi dinars (money) to everyone for a Texas Hold'em Poker tournament. I don't really care for cards, nor am I really any good, but since it wasn't our money I went along with it. I didn't last too long maybe 5 or 6 hands before I was out of money. I ended up winning one had on a fluke and didn't even know it, but hey it was all in good fun. So after that I was pretty much done and I'm not too big on drinking like some of my brethren are. I went to my room laid it down and watched a lil tv before heading into dream land. I could hear them every once in a while and in seems like they enjoyed themselves. The winner of the poker game received 250 bucks, 100 for second and 50 for third. We took a group picture that I will try to post in the next couple of days. Well thats it in a nutshell, holla at ya tomorrow.

What It Is, what It Ain't

I have to say that some don't, wont and can't understand what I am going through (some aren't willing). I can't say I blame you I wouldn't want you to understand even if you could, because the only way for you to understand is to be here and I wish that for no one not even my enemy's (not that I have any). I was fully prepared for what was ahead as far as the physical, being shot at, dodging mortar fire (not really possible, but hopeful) and the possibility of death just so that I can make things easier for myself and my family finacially. I have always been a dreamer and lived in a realm outside reality, because I am a firm believer that reality is what you make it. I have been constantly told that my way of thinking isn't normal or even sane, but I stand by them regardless. Dreams at some point in my life are all that I have had. Some times the thought of being some where ten years from now was the only good thing I had going for me. I will continue to dream, but you best believe that what I dream is more real than anything else this world has to offer.

I wasn't however (Rant over) prepared mentally for what I would have to deal with. The stresses of rules and regulations in a lawless land, conflict of interest, emotional separation and 7000+ miles. One thing that I didn't focus enough on was the fact that all the problems I had when I was home are still there, just not right in front on me. I guess the point is that I am trying to make is that I have been asking for help the wrong way. I have been overloaded mentally and emotionally with baggage as a result of being here and that makes it harder to cope. I just automatically thought that since I have a supportive family that loves me that they would do what was necessary to help me through this troubled time. Not taking into consideration that it isn't a requirement nor a obligation that relief be given (with the exception of Mrs Dubs sorry, but its your job I need that rib of mine), but a selfless sacrifice that may be hard for some to swallow considering they didn't want me hear to begin with. Take nothing I say here as a jab or a personal grudge toward you I am only doing the one thing I do best in this world expressing myself with the GOD given talent of Emotion.

Know this that I will always love all that I meet and know, and how I feel isn't a reflection of what you have or have not done for me it is an expression of how I feel. Take into consideration my situation and ask yourself what would I want from so and so if I were in his shoes and make it applicable if you wish. I will not dwell on the need for support any longer I think that I have made that very clear. If not email me personally , but I will no longer let my weakness be just that a weakness. My grampa said to me the other day that everyone in the world is here for themselves (for the most part) and its time you do the same. I can't really say that I have KNOWINGLY done things just for myself. This journey is probably one of them, and I'm sure I could find more if I think hard enough, but I have always based my decisions on a multitude of factors rather than just making up MY MIND. I WILL make it out of here alive, and I WILL make good on everything I have dreamed of. I will not be held down any longer by anything or anyone including myself, ESPECIALLY myself.

Love Always and thank you all for all that you have done.

A City In Waste

The other day I got a real taste of reality for what life in IRAQ is. We went to a small living establishment within the BIAP area (Baghdad international AirPort). It was a really rundown area with cookie cutter houses and fences made out of tin and bamboo. The problem wasn't the houses and how run down they were or that the slightest wind could knock down their fence that really bothered me. It was the fact that they let their children play in the street without supervision. When we left the area there was a little boy (he was so cute) that was on a tricycle right on the corner of the yard just inches away from the street. I will say this though the children looked very happy in this area, but it doesn't take much for a child to be happy. A little love and an imagination goes a long way with kids(hint hint)... I am thankful for the chance to see what I have seen, but it has had its price. Although I have gained much I have lost just as well. Its is a funny thing what a life experience can do to a person if they are willing to except the consequences.

I am...

Another Disappointment

Something happened before I left to come over here, but I stand by my actions as well as what I said. My father and I had a falling out and every time we got on the phone he ends up hangin up. I have probably grown the most in my adult life in the past 5 years give or take a year. And one thing is for certain I don't have time to play the "guess what I'm thinking" game. Most men have had this problem with woman, at least I know I have. Well it happens to be something that my father likes to play as well. I have a deep appreciation for details and elaboration. I tell people to tell it to me like I'm dumb. One if you explain it in a respectful way, but are very detailed then you leave little room for misunderstanding. Well my disappointment is actually a continuance of some time now where I have lost the belief that my father is a superman. Which is fine because you begin to look at him as a man and not someone with super powers or that can do anything. I have grown past my childlike admiration for him and see him for what he is a man with flaws. Everybody has them, but the measure of a man is determined by the (IMHO) ability to correct and modify those flaws and admit weakness when it shows. I am never to proud for anything anymore and if I need something I will ask. The then becomes when people tell you to open up or tell me what's wrong they tend to ignore what you are saying. To every man that may read this foolish pride resides in all creatures, male and female you ability to see that and overcome it is what makes you a better person not the lack there of. I'm not to proud to ask, but I will not do it continue to do it while it falls on deaf ears. Be aware of your mistakes and you will make less of them. I have come to the thought that everyone should wake up and say what did I do wrong today and how can I make it right. Anyway rant over to make a long story short I have been in IRAQ the deadliest place on earth for 9 weeks and I have yet to hear from my father.

To My Most Dedicated Loved One

I have to admit that I have been in somewhat of a funk and besides not having much to talk about I really haven't had the desire. The place is very draining emotionally and even physically. I have become use to hearing the frequent bombs and explosions and no longer wonder if they are going to land on top of us. I can feel a difference in my mental state and unfortunately it isn't for the better. I can feel that I am losing my grip on whatever good qualities I still possess. Part of that is because I am dealing with this on my own, I'm not getting the support I need so it rests all on my shoulders. I have been here before and it wasn't pretty from what I can recall. A complete shutdown emotionally and a large gaping hole with a desire for fulfillment. I have only one constant that I can depend on from day to day well actually 2. I can depend on disappointment that my cries for assistance go unanswered, but on a positive note I can depend on my grandmother (Boop) to be there to talk to me everyday without question. To think that this person has given so much of themselves only to continue to give on a daily basis is utterly amazing. If I or anyone for that matter had half her dedication life itself would be a breeze.

I love you Grandma Boop (and u 2 Grampa D1)

Today And Til The End Of Time

Hello all you lovely people I would like to update you on a little something I did today. I purchased the rights to a website for future use. So with out further procrastination I present to you WadeFamilyTree.com . Now so there is no confusion as to what this site is for and why I will attempt to explain. We (The Wades) have always spoken about keeping a written record of our family history and here is our chance. Since I have an abundance of time on my hands I will do the major upkeep and updating. But what I do need is for all of you to send me the updated information so that I can update the site accordingly. That means stories, pictures, birthdates, likes and dislikes, the whole nine. I would like to have the site up and running within a matter of weeks at least with some basic information. I thought it also a good idea to use this site for updates as far as vacation plans and family outings. Please email me and let me know what you think. I will see about getting everyone their very own email address via the website. That's pretty much it for today nothing new really going on.

Talk to you later.

2 Months Ago Today

It was December 16 when I left Dallas for DC. That was as the title says 2 months ago today. Today Wednesday the 16th also makes 8 weeks since I have been in Iraq. I can remember the day I received the call for the offer to come here. I believe it was September the 21st. I pretty much knew in my hearth that I wanted to go and so did Mrs. Dubs. Both myself and my wife kid ourselves by asking the other if we have a problem with this or that, even though we both know we don't want to keep each other from doing what we want. I think more than anything it is a mutual respect that we have. I wouldn't have came here if E told me she didn't want me to go, but I don't think she would have told me no matter how she might have felt. I can respect that and as I said before she is a better person than me, because some times I left my own selfish motives interfere with what she may want at times. I have a deep admiration for the strength that she posses and in some way rely very heavily on that strength. I want some times for her to rely on me, but the truth of it is she doesn't need to.

Here's to you Mrs. Dubs

Here's to you Fam.

Love Always Ill be home before you know it.

Happy Valentine's Day

Well I was trying to post a picture this evening, but it hasn't been acting right. So Happy Love Day (IE Valentine's Day). I am fully aware that Valentine's Day is just the Mans continued effort to get us good hard working people to spend our dollars on the businesses that they own. Oh well I'm a fool for love what can I say and Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays. Well actually they are all my favorite, but this holiday is one (IMHO) of great intimacy between ones mate. And unfortunately Since I have been married I haven't had the pleasure of spending one single Valentine's with my wife. Every single time I have been away on work well next year (GOD willing) I will spend my first valentine's with what will be my wife of 3 and a half years...

WOW who would of thunk it.

Not I nor Mrs. Dubs for that matter (assumption). But all in all if it were not for my greatest love in this world (Mrs. Dub) and along with a few others here and there I wouldn't be the man I am today, nor would I have been to the places I have been, or even met my wife for that matter. I would like to thank to men that unbeknownst to them have have the greatest impact on my adult life as far as manhood goes. They are My uncle FL C-man (Mr. CINI) and my uncle DT. I can not express enough how you two are an inspiration to my daily walk and I owe you more than you can ever know. From one man to another I love you. To the great woman of my life (other than my lovely wife) you know who you are and I love you all. Take care and have a Happy Valentine's Day.

Love Always

A Day to Remember....

I would like to take the time to tell you even though I am for the most part safe. I am privy to information and events that most people don't care to know. This has brought about a rationalization that I would like to express to the utmost. DO NOT TAKE UNNECESSARY RISK...!! Don't go ten miles over the speed limit just so that you can get to work on time. By no means put yourself at risk any more than the world has already put upon this world. I would hate to come from this time in my life unharmed (GOD WILLING) to find one of my loved ones not with us anymore (GOD FORBID), because of a silly accident that could have been prevented. Don't do your makeup in the car or talk on the cell phone the entire time of the trip. I know it has been common place to do these things and to multi-task, but concentrate on what is important and don't take unnecessary risk.

GOD has taught me very valuable lessons in my time here that I don't think I would have been able to appreciate if I wasn't here. How many times have you or someone you know been in a car accident and lived to tell it. And you or they said to themselves I will never speed again. I know I have with just close calls so I know someone that reads this has been through something worse and said the same, but haven't followed up with what they said. I'm here to tell you that you live and breath only because the almighty says you can. Please don't take that for granted.

Being here has been the biggest experience in my life and it has made me appreciate things so much. I would like to continue to appreciate all of my friends and loved ones as well. With that off my chest and I only have one request. Go slower take your time the world isn't going to end based on how fast or how quick YOU or I can be.

TIME is but a measurement by which we follow
Endless in its bounty we aim to conquer
Knowing it can never be over taken or out done
With knowledge in hand it does nothing for the desire
Running against the wind, thoughts of victory
Flying over the the clouds to the ends of the Earth
Always thinking I can do better, go further
The result always the same
Time WILL catch up with you
So use it wisely and enjoy it while it last
Don't compete with something that is out of our league
You will be destined for failure every TIME.

Be safe and be prayerful loved ones,
K

The Temperature Is Dropping... Burrr

It is at this very minute 44 degrees outside. Now I really want to see a show of hands that didn't realize that it gets that cold in Baghdad IRAQ. I know I sure didn't expect it, but its here and I'm here freezin my toes off. I have been listening to this album here lately that has had me in a trance and it has put me to sleep the last 2 nights. Since I have been on this shift I haven't had a problem sleeping, nor have I had a problem getting up in time for work.

I talked to one of our guys in the IZ (international Zone IE Green Zone or whatever they call it on the news). He told me that every Thursday they have a few parties in the main palace. There are a lot of State Department workers from DC and all over working here as well. You would be surprised the amount of people and their various backgrounds and age groups. I saw a guy today that looked like one of my Gramps old roofing buddies. I mean Santa Clause with a biker jacket pure white hair and a full beard (he he). Not tryin to say you are old or anything Gramps, just an observation of relativity. I see some people here that look like they can barely walk on some days then I see some of the young men and women in the Army that look to young to even shave. I mean these girls and boys look like kids to me and I'm not that old. I pray for those the most, because they still have their lives a head of them and for the most part haven't experienced what this world has to offer, not much but there are some good things. Well I'm rambling so I'll leave you with this

A dream takes shape, but with no beginning
I awake to the blur of a new morning
A day begins, but there is no end in sight
A thought comes to mind, but I've forgotten it
As night falls it seems to all come together
I lay down to rest, eyes heavy from time

The cycle repeats and I am lost again
Lost in everyday life

Repetition sucks
LOL

7 Weeks in, 6 Out

Current Temperature: 42 degrees F.
Local Time: 9:56pm

State of Mind: Well I have sensitive readers so I will skip that part.

The only thing right now keeping me from going insane is my favorite local programs back in the States. Prayer can on do so much for your mental state and it isn't actually what you call entertaining. Not that I expect it to, but I will carry on with prayer till my last breath. None the less that still does nothing for my current state of stir crazy. I am looking forward to playing ball this coming Sunday, but man time seems to go slow when you are waiting for something. Well all I can do is wait.

J (the second brother to show up) has been to the green zone more times than I can count and he has been here for only a month. He has also made several trips north just 17 kilometers short of the IRAN border. Just yesterday he returned from his last trip and informed us of what he saw. He was at a check-point waiting to go thru when a wedding party just in front of them started shooting. You know like in the old traditions of the Wild West. Not uncommon to do for celebratory reasons, but not exactly a smart choice given the circumstances, and current locale. Well the check point was one of the NEW IRAQ ARMY and rather than wait to see what the situation was they shot on the wedding party. Well the wedding party started to shoot back for fear of their own lives.

The whole time J is right behind them, but it wasn't long before our security force took action (and that is to get the heck out of the way). They pulled into on-coming traffic and let loose the gas flow. J said he looked back and saw the wedding party just lying there most likely dead. From what I am told there wasn't any direct fire on them, but can you imagine the sight of seeing someone die just because they were celebrating. I did a search online and couldn't find any details of the story, I wouldn't doubt if it went unreported. This is the New Wild West incarnate and anything at any time can happen.

I saw a woman in full business dress attire a few weeks back with a shoulder holster and what looked like a Nine mil Beretta. I mean dress shoes long skirt, and tacky blouse to match. Just the other day when we went to get the other brother the manager grabbed his gun and handed it to me while he drove. I might be inclined to write a book when I leave here even though my time her thus far has been relatively safe and boring. But that is a good thing and in no way a complaint. If watching someone get shot, or participating in a gunfight is exciting I can just wait for the movie, or the game. Either way I wish not to see the excitement first hand that has been spoken of.

May the Almighty Protect those that Seek HIM.

Tomorrow....

We have been getting new people in weekly now, and are doubling up in the rooms now, I am fortunate enough not to have to share my domicile, but I don't think any one would want to any way. We are suppose to be moving to a new site on the base that is 3 times larger than our current location. But there are several problems, that are slowing this process down. For one the site is just a dirt pile no concrete no facilities (wash room and what not) and then that leave us with our already pressing transportation problem. We have about 7 cars for the entire group which is now up to about 25. Not everyone wants to go eat at the same place, or go to the PX at the same time and if we happen to slit our force to two different location then we will also be reducing our automotive capacity.

This place isn't planned at all its just thrown together and the next manager comes in and says: "here's the glue from the states lets make it work. Oh by the way I only have a handful of glue so we are gonna have to stretch it out and make it last a few months". Now how in the world does this concern me you might ask, it doesn't. I could care less, because I am trying to rebuild my home not IRAQ. I love the thought that I am here with a greater purpose than to make money, but what it all boils down to is I'm here to make money. I will no longer delude myself into thinking otherwise, no matter how much good I think I might be doing the greater good here is for me. Interesting once you stop misleading yourself and realize the truth for what it is.

Boy I'm Outta Shape

Well I found a place to play ball, but they only play on Sundays at around 2pm. So I went up and played a few games and didn't do so bad, but boy was I in pain afterward. A combination of many things that I wont get into, but none the less I had a good time and plan on being there at 1:30 this coming Sunday.

Other than that its been real slow and boring and impulse buying is starting to nag at me. A lot of the guys here buy stuff for no reason and I couldn't understand why. I mean I have ALOT of things I want, but nothing here really takes my fancy too much. But now I'm starting to see why and how it happens. You sit here with nothing to do, but work eat and shop at the PX, for the most part. And now they have made these PXs like Walmart stores. And everyone here knows what happens when you go into a Walmart. But I was able to stay my purchase hunger THIS TIME.

I found a real good spot for some pictures tomorrow I will post them as soon as I get them.

Love ya

Then There Was Three......

That's right the third Broham (for MCI) of many has made it to Baghdad. He is an older cat, but it doesn't matter we need as many brothers as we can get in here. He seems a interesting enough, he said he has been traveling the world for 26 years. I look forward to working with him cause new blood makes it easier to deal with the old blood. Other than that all is well in Baghdad. Man it amazes me still when I say that.

Going Crazy....!!!

I could never live in a Co-Op. I don't like other peoples habits and I am often reminded of my own as being problematic. And that is fine if you can pick up a dish and move on, but that isn't the case here. I spend more time with some of these people than most men spend with their wives (now me personally I like spending time with my wife). Now I know that I can sometimes, for lack of a better word, make a complaint about most things under the sun. But being here has made me appreciate so much that I wake up every morning thanking GOD for every lil thing I can think of. Humidity, now living in Texas and Illinois who would have thought that humidity is something I would thank GOD for, but now I do. Now I have never complained about bathes and showers I love water sports, but believe it or not I appreciate them even more.

Most importantly my Wife

Now when ever I dated I always looked for things to be done a certain way to my liking, and mostly this comes from your mother or if you are a woman your father. So anyway the bar was pretty high to say the least and I have come to appreciate the fact that I can have something done the way I like, and probably even better than I like, with little input from myself. This isn't the only thing that I appreciate about my lovely wife, but it is one worth mentioning.

I only suggest to the people back home to stop waiting till you don't have something to appreciate it. When you get in your car to go to work just say to yourself "Man I love the fact that I can drive to work", or even "Man it feels good to have a job...!!" Now I know I have always been a thankful person regardless to what it is, but I have only begun to understand the value of appreciation. And so I will close saying this, there is nothing in this world that I appreciate more than one I can always look to and smile. You are my inspiration, my motivation, and most importantly my appreciation. You are my better half and that is a literal statement. I love you E more than you will ever know. (post phone convo)

Stay Off The Grass Posted by Hello

Not to much going on

Well the past couple of days hasn't been all that interesting, nothing worth talking about anyway. Well actually I have been getting to know the guy who got me the job her a little better. A very interesting man to say the least. I have to thank my old manager for the plug, because if not for her I wouldn't be employed at the moment, at least not here. Now as far as my Supervisor RSM (Regiment Sergeant Major his title when he was in the British forces) he is a very interesting guy. I enjoy working for him a great deal and feel he respects the knowledge that I have in our field. The funny thing is I asked him if my old boos had given him any other names and he said no that I was the only one. And whe he called to ask her that she didn't have to think about it that my name came to her immediately. I have to admit that I was in a way honored and a lil worried. But RSM told me that I was hired before he even talked to me that my old Bosses recommendation alone was all that I needed. CheeseCake Factory just doesn't seem like thanks enough for what she has done for me. At any rate that pretty much sums it up for me for this evening hopefully I will have something more interesting to talk about tomorrow. Sleep well family.

Love Always,

Outcome Better than Expected

Well I would have actually suggested that you watch the news yesterday, because it was actually a good sight for once. They had cameras all over the country at the polls to see the reaction of the people. I will admit to you that this past November was the first time I have ever voted. And basically the only true answer I can give is I never thought that my vote really counted. But what I have come to realize (with help from none other than Mrs. Dubs) is that as an African American the fight for the right to vote was so much that on that premise alone I should vote. There were other factors of course that helped sway me, but most of it was the Mrs. Afterward I had a genuine good feeling about what I did regardless of the outcome. I was proud of my right to vote and that I was able to without a battle or baton. So with the history of a people on my shoulders and the fate of the world in my hands (not really) I will not falter again. So when our Iraqi counterparts said they weren't going to vote I was upset. Because it isn't as if they fought for the right as many Americans have over the centuries. We picked the battle for them and at present are policing there country for them. Now I'm not agreeing that we went about this the right way, but unfortunately we are here now and to leave would bring this country to civil war. So do not take voting lightly and make sure you take the time to do so. I'm not saying to vote for everything under the sun, but at the very least every four years 1 day out of your time.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but at any rate it was a joy to see Iraqi people happy about the vote on yesterday and rejoicing in the streets. And I do commend the Armed forces for the efforts in securing their safety so that they would have the chance to vote without the fear of death. See one of the smartest things that they did ,since I have been here anyway, was impose a vehicle restriction in the areas of voting. Well that put a big damper in the insurgents plans and as a result the voting polls were filled and people were safe. Geraldo even brought his tired butt out and did some real reporting for once. But hey not everyone is all bad all the time right....

Remember Voting is a Honor and a privilege
and isn't something that should be taken lightly
